Vernovis is currently partnering with a multi-billion-dollar utilities organization in the Midwest to place a Lead Accounting Research Analyst. This resource will be a key member of the technical accounting group who evaluates technical accounting matters in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). The analyst is a key business partner for functional groups throughout the organization and provides accounting guidance to ensure transactions are being recorded in accordance with the company’s accounting policies and procedures. This individual can work independently, evaluate ad-hoc transactions and clearly communicate technical accounting conclusions across the organization.

What You'll Do:
- Evaluates ad-hoc financial transactions and performs assessment of related accounting and financial statement impacts through preparation of technical accounting research and drafting of technical memorandums which may include preparation of journal entries for the ad-hoc transactions.
- Manages company’s accounting for stock compensation including accounting evaluation of annual grant awards, monitoring of monthly activity, preparation of ongoing journal entries and partnering with compensation as technical expert in ASC 718. Â
- Partners with various groups across organization to educate and provide technical guidance on company’s IT software capitalization policy. Performs evaluation of technical accounting matters for significant IT projects within budgeting and approval process.
- Leads company’s efforts for annual Employee Benefit Plan Audits including management and oversight of the compilation and review process of the plan financial statements by internal parties as well as external auditor.Â
- Demonstrates ability to understand problems and willingness to evaluate and recommend solutions.
- Evaluates and researches recently issues accounting pronouncements from the FASB and SEC to determine potential impacts to company’s financial statements.
- Compiles various analyses and calculations required for internal and external reporting in support of SEC reporting team. Identifies and researches related SEC reporting requirements and drafts disclosures based on relevant disclosure requirements.
- Supports regulatory initiatives by gathering data and preparing regulatory schedules and/or preparing pro-forma calculations, testimony and data requests; Assists with review and analysis of regulatory documents.
- Collaborates with external auditors including providing relevant supporting documentation and responding to ongoing audit requests and questions.
- Demonstrates a working knowledge of financial statements, metrics and measures, and key strategic business initiatives.
- Demonstrates our commitment to quality by documenting work fully and accurately as well as supporting control environment.
- Takes continuous improvement actions to identify, analyze and enhance existing processes within our organization to maximize opportunities for efficiency and effectiveness and meet new goals and objectives.
- Four-year degree in accounting or finance
- 4+ years of experience within accounting or finance, public accounting preferred but not required
- Experience working for a public company and GAAP financial statements
- Experience with GAAP research – stock compensation, employee benefit plans, software capitalization, and writing technical memos
